Hello and welcome to my website, thank you for taking the time to visit.
Sound design is the art and process of manipulating sound elements to achieve a desired effect. It is employed in a variety of disciplines including film, theatre, music recording, live music performance, and computer game software development. Sound design usually involves the manipulation of previously composed audio, and in some cases it may also involve the creative composition of new audio as well. A Sound Designer is one who practices the art of sound design.
That’s what it says in Wikipedia so it must be true, except of course it is much more than that. The above description doesn’t include the technical aspects of actually assessing the requirements and challenges of a show. Yet this must be done in order to assemble the correct equipment to convey a live performance such as that found in musical theatre. That is also sound design.
If it is a straight drama production then a good sound design should create atmosphere and help carry the audience along with the characters into the world of the play and should be no less a part of the story telling than the set, costume or lighting design.
So that is what I set out to do either with creative sound effects or composed music, great storytelling.
On the pages of this website are a selection of productions I have had the pleasure of designing sound for. Where possible I have included samples of music or effects that I created for the show. Production Images where available have also been used and the photographers credited in the production details but particular thanks go to Robert Day, Drew Baumohl and Derek Graham (Nottingham Playhouse) for taking the time to delve into their archives to supply me with these excellent images.
It is a great privilege and pleasure to work in theatre and I have enjoyed tremendously working with the hugely talented creative teams listed within this website and so thanks is due to them also.
